Elevation Gain: 1491, Loss: 1729m

A very long day.

Knowing today would be a long one I got up at 6 and left at 7, just as it was starting to get light. By 10 I was at the Mangamuku Dairy where I enjoyed coffee and toasted sandwiches for brunch.

Then another 5km of road walk on SH1 which wasn’t too bad before turning off onto a gravel side road and starting the climb into the Raetea Forest. This was rather challenging with several peeks to climb – rather hard work. Plus it was so hot that the sweat was pouring off me all day. It was so hot that my phone got water inside it from my sweat so I had to pull the case apart and dry it so that I could use it.

When I came out of the forest I walked the couple of km to Takahue where I’m staying with a wonderful Maori family who have looked after me extremely well. So nice to have a hot shower and a lovely meal. We spent hours chatting. It was great.

Tomorrow only 17km to Kaitaia.
