Aparima Hut to Telford Campsite

11/1/22, Day 81, 22km, Total 2021km

Elevation Gain: 1153, Loss: 1200m

Another good day on the Trail.

Actually started early today at 6.30am for no reason other than we were ready. Once again it was overcast and cool today but we had a fair bit of climbing to do so that was fine. Made it to Lower Wairaki hut for lunch then the big climb of the day. More than 500m up and it seemed to go up forever. The view from the top of that hill was excellent but spoiled by the clouds. Normally you can see the sea.

Then a steep descent to the campsite. We arrived at 4.00pm.

This campsite has the worst sandflies we have ever encountered. They are viscous. Our usual defence is to cover as much exposed skin as possible with pants and socks. But here they are so relentless that I had to eat my dinner in my tent – my only refuge from them.

Tomorrow is all day crossing Mt Linton Station to stay at a private hut/shearers quarters at Birchwood. We think we will be at Bluff next Monday – in 6 days time. Hard to believe we are so close.
