2/1/22, Day 73, 22km, Total 1835km
Elevation Gain:1623, Loss: 1816m
An exhausting day. Second highest elevation gain so far.
We woke at our usual time of 6am to what looked to be an excellent day. Away by 7 as usual to start the climbs. We knew we were up for a bit of climbing today but hadn’t realised it was going to be only a few metres short of a new record.
We arrived at Rose’s Hut for lunch and from the hut could see the final 500m climb. The choice was to stay at the hut and have a big day tomorrow or carry on and have a big day today. We chose the later and got on with it.
After Rose’s Saddle we dropped steeply down to the river where again we had . choice: a high level track or in the river. We went for the river option and it was excellent. Best river walk experience I’ve had since the Cameron River in the Kawekas.
Pitched our tents in the DOC campsite that has 4WD access from Arrowtown. Nice spot.
Tomorrow 3-4 hours over a hill and into Arrowtown. I’m looking forward to another chocolate milkshake.
Lots of hills A coil of wire beside the track Lake Wanaka in distance Brown hills Roses hut We came down the hill in centre. 500m down and 500m back up. Fun Dennis at the Saddle Looking south Heading down to the river One of many river crossings. Really warm today. Our camp at Macetown Is this an orchid?
