2/4/22, Day 109, 38km
We were first away at 8.00am. The river was once again peaceful, quiet, and picturesque. The scenery is indeed stunning. At times the river is so still the reflections of the river banks are stunning. Lots of very high cliffs on both sides of the river. Beautiful.
We were the second boat to arrive at the landing where you walk to the “Bridge to Nowhere” which was just as well as there were no signs to let us know. Really awkward place to get in and out of the canoes. We watched one couple totally fill their canoe with water while trying to manage that landing.
The walk to the bridge took 30 minutes and was worth it. It is an impressive structure in the middle of nowhere.
We had lunch when we got back from the bridge then 90mins later we were at Tieke campsite. We stopped in to look at the DOC hut and marae. It’s a big hut in a nice spot. No sign of the whanau who provide a welcome. We then crossed the river to the private campsite where we are in a cabin. Hot showers were excellent.
Tomorrow will be a shorter day but with the biggest rapids.
