Pakiri to Mangawhai

7/3/22, Day 95, 23km, Total 2479km

Elevation Gain: 277, Loss: 274m

A wonderful beach walking day.

Left at 8 so that I could get most of the 14km of beach walking done before the midday high tide. I shouldn’t have worried as I walked it all barefoot so it didn’t matter. There was always hard sand if you don’t mind getting your feet wet. So the beach walk was really pleasant and like yesterday I didn’t meet anyone. Today’s exception was a SOBO TA hiker I met in the last carpark before the 5km road walk into Mangawhai. He had also started at Mercer like me and walked to Bluff then restarted at the Cape. Nice guy and he gave me some good tips on where to stay.

I arrived in Mangawhai at 1.30pm and went to the pub to rehydrate and have lunch. I was too stuffed and dehydrated to eat last night so I was rather hungry.

Stayed at a Trail Angels place with this cute little hut with 2 beds, a flush toilet and plenty of tables and chairs. Plus only a few hundred metres from the shops. All for a koha of $10. Hayley, another SOBO hiker stayed there also. The only downside was the smoke alarm going off at 3am. It was loud enough to wake me.
