25/1/22, Day 6, 18km, Total 99km
Elevation Gain: 669, Loss: 879m
An excellent day with nice beach walks.
Left at 8 and gained a lot of elevation – enough to get some cell signal. Checked the forecast and it was for rain today and tomorrow. Fortunately it did not arrive today – it was overcast all day.
At Little Hellfire beach I found a new Hunters Hut. Really close to the beach and unlimited firewood. Definitely add that to my Lotto Hut list. Over another hill, only 250m, to Mason Bay. Timed it perfectly to get past the rock point with the tide out. 4km of beach walk then 1km inland to the hut. Its huge at 22 bunks in a nice spot.
I went out for a bit of Kiwi spotting at 8.30pm. Spent an hour wandering around. Gave up and returned to the hut at 9.30. Took off my coat and a Kiwi ran across the lawn in front of the hut. Disappeared before I could get a photo. These kiwis are huge.
