Taipo Hut to Mavora Lakes Campsite

7/1/22, Day 78, 29km, Total 1932km

Elevation Gain: 490, Loss: 619m

A day of easy walking through nice open country.

Really cold last night and 8 degrees in the hut when we woke up this morning. The sun was up when we left at 7 and soon warmed us up. We made good time to Boundary Hut then Carys Hut. Carys is on the lake edge and has a coal range plus running water from a stream. Very nice.

We decided to keep going to the Mavora campsite and camp again tomorrow night closer to the main road. The 43km from the campsite is a bit much for one day.

The Mavora campsite is an awesome spot. Lots of people boating on the lake.

A couple of hikers walked in just before we went to bed. It was Sagar who is the Trail Angel who lives in TeAnau that I have sent my food and shoes to.

Today’s walk was a very gradual decent on an easy track. Very pleasant walking through nice country. Some cattle were grazing up the valley near the Taipo Hut.

We are starting to count down the days until we arrive at Bluff. It seems strange to be so close to the end of an adventure that in some ways we hoped would never end.
