Tekapo to Lake Ohau Lodge (Biking)

16/12/21, Day 59, 94km, Total 1512km

Elevation Gain: 593, Loss: 766m

One of my best days yet. Totally awesome.

Yesterday we drove from Methven to Tekapo and caught up with Annie at Bespoke Bikes and she fitted us out with bikes and all the gear we would need – helmets, high vis vests, saddle bags, drink bottles etc. So we hit the bike trail at 7.30 in a light drizzle. Over a slight hill from Tekapo and down to a hydro canal that we followed on a mostly sealed road for 20km.

Got to Twizell at 11.30 and to the Hydro cafe for lunch. A nice one hour break then off for the last 50km, again mostly following a canal. Then around the shore of Lake Pukaki to the Lodge where we left the bikes. Dorothy picked us up in the motorhome and we returned to Tekapo.

It was a great ride and covered in one day what would have been 3 days walking. Unfortunately the clouds obscured the awesome views of Mt Cook across the lakes but that will be there for another day.

We were indeed lucky get a relatively fine day today given the floods that are happening at places like Christchurch and Fielding.

Looks like the weather will be more settled from tomorrow so we think we will return to Methven and start walking south again the day after.
